Make A Difference Day 2010

    Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others – a day when neighbors help neighbors. The Volunteer and Information Center’s HandsOn River Region is facilitating a local day of service on Oct. 23 in cooperation with many of our area non-profits. 
   
These service projects focus attention on needs in our community and the volunteers who make good things happen.

1.         Dogs Need Shade, Too – The Montgomery Tree Committee is partnering with Montgomery Humane Society to create a shaded area for the dog run lot. We’re going to change their dirt exercise area, where adoptees meet their prospective canines, into a    more enjoyable area.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 30
 

2.         Fall Festival - Community Revitalization Initiative - Utopia Ministries is working with   Billy Thames Boys and Girls Club and Regency Community Neighborhood Association to increase neighborhood participation. Volunteers will register participants, assist with traffic,  and assist with demonstration tables highlighting minor home repair techniques, gardening, etc. (No prior skills required.)

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 10
            Requirements: Must be 18+
 

3.         Painting – Family Sunshine Center offices need fresh coat of paint. Volunteers need to have prior experience. They will provide the supplies, but they invite donations of low-fume paint, masking tape, paint brushes, paint rollers, etc.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 22-25
            Requirements: Must be 18+ and have painting skills.
 

4.         Clean Up Illegal Signs - Help the Montgomery Clean City Commission clean up those illegally-placed signs that can be a safety hazard. Sign up with VIC and we’ll assign you to an area near your home, or you can choose and area.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Unlimited

           

5.         Fall Cleaning – Mental Health America’s main building needs a thorough cleaning. Roll up your sleeves and help the staff clean the carpets, baseboards, blinds, etc. All supplies are furnished.

            Location: 1116 S. Hull St.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 10

           

6.         Prattville/Autauga Humane Shelter – Fall shelter cleaning day on Oct 24 (Can’t do on 25th). Clean out cages and kennels, wipe down walls, miniblinds, wash windows, minor repairs, yard work, organize storage areas, seep and mop.
            8 a.m. to noon.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 10+ (Must be 16 years old or have a chaperone.)

 

7.         Quilting for a Cause – Learn to quilt for a good cause. River Region Prayer and Squares will show you how to make quilts for the Friendship Mission homeless shelter, 63 quilts for orphans in Moldova and 45 pillowcases for an Air Force squadron.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 20-30
 

8.         Friendship Mission Community Garden – Friendship Mission, in cooperation with a Frazer United Methodist Church Sunday School class, care for a 16-plot community   garden that feeds the homeless in the shelter and people in need within the           community.       Come help them work on the garden to prepare it for the winter and spring.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: up to 50 with garden equipment, 30 without

 9.         Personal Care Bags – Make personal hygiene care bags for the homeless or nursing home residents. This can be done at home, at an office gathering, with your Sunday   school class, or with your friends. Suggested items you may  include: toothpaste,       toothbrush, shampoo, soap, rain ponchos, chap stick, tampons, sanitary napkins, brush/comb, cotton swabs, Tylenol/Advil, antacid, tissues, band aides, grocery store gift        cards, crayons, coloring book pens/paper/envelopes, snacks, gum, playing cards
            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: unlimited
 

10.       Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama – Various GS troops will conduct litter pick-ups in their neighborhoods, at school and on playgrounds. This project is fully staffed by Girl   Scouts and their leaders.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – any Girl Scout troop
 

11.       Blanket, Hat collection – Collect blankets and hats that are in good condition to give to the homeless and others in need. These can be delivered directly to the agencies or we can make arrangements for you.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: unlimited
 

12.       Environmental Cleanup – the Woods – Clearing curb inlets next to road of debris, placing storm drain markers and hanging door hangars, flyers highlighting environmental pollution and how to clean and prevent it. This kind of pollution winds up in our beaches,     etc.

            VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 20
