VISTA Member Position Description

 Organization Description

 The Volunteer & Information Center (VIC), an agency of the River Region United Way, serves a multi-county area in Alabama by mobilizing volunteers and connecting people, information and services to meet local needs and build a strong, caring community. VIC is an affiliate of the national Hands On Network, the 211Alabama Connects system and Alliance of Information and Referral Services.

 

Goal

 The goal of this VISTA position is to expand capacity of the 211 Connects program to provide and maintain a comprehensive multi-county health and human resources database to effectively assist and empower callers to meet needs, avoid homelessness and quickly re-house people facing homelessness.

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Commitment of one year of service
  • Background in, or some working knowledge of, social work, social services, or human services. 
  • Be outgoing and posses good communication and customer service skills
  • Have good time management skills and be a self starter, able to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Be proficient in Word, Excel, web search, and have a comfort level in learning new computer applications.
  • Have a good driving record and a reliable vehicle

Job Description 

  • Utilize the web, existing program data, and travel to research, identify, and gather resource data to expand multi-county database of faith-based, non-profit, and governmental resources in multi-county area.
  • Collect and maintain all resource documentation and enter into database software program
  • Work directly with the 211 supervisor to discuss challenges/limitations to resource development.
  • Develop an interview protocol and a system for identifying, assessing, and maintaining database of affordable housing resources.
  • Determine eligibility of prospective clients needing affordable housing for the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program.
  • Collect and enter client information into the Homeless Information Management System (HMIS) and create follow-up system and surveys to identify individuals and/or families that have remained in stabilized housing for a six month period.
  • Research identify, and submit applications for program support.

 Compensation

 AmeriCorps VISTA living allowance (approximately $900/month), health benefits, child care assistance, student loan forbearance or deferment , a $1200 end of service stipend or $4,725 educational award.

This one year AmeriCorps VISTA position is offered in conjunction with the Volunteer and Information Center’s “Building a Better Future for the River Region VISTA Project”.
